Simple flanged cushion

Cushions are a great way to update furnishings without massive expense and can be incredibly easy to make. This simple flanged cushion can be made in minutes and only takes 50 cm of two different fabrics.
Requirements
50 cm of 112/114 cm wide furnishing fabric x 2 co-ordinating colours/prints (5/8 yd of 44/45”)
General purpose sewing thread to match fabric
35 cm square cushion pad (14”)
Ruler
Fabric marking chalk pencil or wheel
Preparing fabric pieces
1. Decide which fabric will be the main one, then fold it right sides and selvedges together. Pin layers together to prevent them moving.
2. Measure a 46 cm (18”) square and cut out from both layers to get two pieces.
3. Repeat with second contrast piece of fabric.
To make up

1. With right sides together, stitch one fabric and one contrast fabric section together, leaving an opening along the lower edge large enough for turning, and trim the corners. NB: Trim corners at an angle.
2. Turn the fabric right side out and press, then slip-stitch the opening closed.
3. Repeat with other main and contrast fabric squares.
4. Using the ruler and chalk marker, draw a line 5 cm (2”) in from edges all the way around. This is the new stitching line to create the flange.

5. With contrast sides of cushion together, stitch the front to the back along the stitching line, leaving an opening of approx 25 cm (10”) in the centre of one side to insert the cushion pad.
6. Insert the pad between the two sections through the opening; close the opening by continuing to stitch along the stitching line, connecting the previous stitching.
