Sewing Projects

Madeira Petal Cushions

Everybody can embroider with Avalon Plus - the water soluble stabiliser. This essential stitching aid is recommended as a facilitation for all kind of work in embroidery and sewing.

This stabiliser looks like a non woven and enforces or replaces the fabric during sewing and dissolves in warm water with no residue. These characteristics enable you to create many special projects, like for example producing the petals for these two cushions.

Materials

  • Avalon Plus from MADEIRA
  • Embroidery threads from MADEIRA
  • Magic Pen from MADEIRA
  • 1 bowl of warm water

Steps to make

1. Stretch one layer of Avalon Plus in your hoop and apply the petals directly on the Avalon Plus with MADEIRA vanishing Magic Pen.

2. Set your Sewing Machine to freehand embroidery. For this purpose choose the darning program, install your darning foot and lower the feeder. Use machine embroidery thread as upper and bobbin thread, reduce the upper tension if necessary.

3. Embroider the outline of the petals 2 x freehand by moving the hoop slowly with your hands at high sewing speed. The coordination of the sewing speed and the speed at which you are moving the hoop determine the density of the embroidery and the stitch length.

4. Embroider the petals with small circular movements. The stitches must be connected at all times so that the motif does not fall apart after the embroidery backing has been rinsed out.

5. After completing the petals, remove Avalon plus from the frame and place in a bowl with warm water. Take out the petals and rinse the residue of the backing under water.

6. Place the embroidery between two towels and iron until dry. Stretch the petals in shape if necessary.

You can use the petals for bags, bracelets and hats or as shown here on cushions.
