Lacy Knickers

Having mastered the techniques on our sewing technique page (Luxurious Lingerie - part 1), try making some pretty knickers. Choose a two way stretch knitted fabric and stretch lace or make them up in an all-over design stretch lace.
Materials
- 50 cm (1/2 yd) of stretch fabric like cotton jersey, Lycra or satin stretch
- 25 cm (10”) all over stretch lace
- 2 m (2 yd) of elastic with edge detail
- Good quality polyester thread to match
Useful equipment - Super stitch or stretch needle and an Overlock foot for a sewing machine or an overlocker
PATTERN
Print the pattern pieces below and assemble the back and front patterns by overlapping and sticking accurately.
There is a 6 mm (1/4") seam allowance included in the pattern.
Small = 86 cm (34”) hip (follow small broken line)
Medium = 102 cm (40”) hip (follow long broken line
Large = 120 cm (48”) hip (follow solid line)
- Cut out 1 back to the fold and 1 front in stretch fabric and two side pieces in stretch lace.
- With right sides together, place the front and sides together and sew with a 6 mm (1/4”) seam. Use an overlocker for this or attach the overlock foot to the sewing machine and use an overcast stitch.
- With the right sides facing sew the front and back pieces together at the crotch seam as in step 2.
- Sew the sides to the back as above.
- Starting with the legs, measure the top of the thigh and cut two pieces of elastic measuring 80% (4/5) of this measurement. Stitch the ends together to form a circle and attach to each leg as described in the quarter pinning method above.
- Prepare the elastic for the waist in the same way and sew in place to finish the knickers.
