How To

Top Ten Tricks for Designer looks

If you like designer fashions, take a look at Sue Locke’s top ten tips to create your own designer-style accessories

1 Take a tip from the Prada design house and bejewel your pool-side bikini by adding some small rhinestones.

2 Create a 2009 Hermes look scarf for a fraction of the retail price. Cut and hem a length of silk cloth in a  eopard print and finish the ends with narrow fringing.

3 Copy designer Phillip Lim - he has made a plain boxy jacket special by adding suede trims to the cuffs, pocket edges and neck and front edges. (You could use fabric suede.)

4 Small floral prints are still with us, create an unusual take on them by making a pair of pretty knee-hovering culottes.

5 If you love to embroider look for a dress pattern such as Simplicity 2722 and cover the yoke area with your workmanship.

6 Create some designer pumps for a young girl by adding heart-shaped felt pieces over the toe area.

TOP TIP… TOP TIP… TOP TIP… TOP TIP…
7 Cotton totes can be made unique by adding a couple of over-sized tassels to the zip (available from home furnishing shops).

8 If you fall in love with a loud print and only want a suggestion of it on your outfit then buy enough to make a small neck scarf. It will really stand out against a plain white or black shirt.

9 Tired of that plain denim jacket then add rows and rows of ribbon to the front and back yoke areas but work with one colour and different designs for maximum effect.

10 Inexpensive hair accessories with fabric flower trims are easy to find. Trim off the flowers and use them to decorate a plain t-shirt.
