How To
How to choose the correct bra size
No matter whether you are wearing this season’s hottest dress, a sexy pair of shorts or a plain white t-shirt, the key to self assurance and sexy style are every woman’s foundation garments; her underwear. Lingeriebrands.co.uk provide some useful tips.
By choosing the right underwear for your shape, style and support, you can appear slimmer and more toned meaning your inner confidence comes across in your outer appearance.
However, before selecting the right kind of underwear to suit your daily casual life or a special event you need to glam up for, most importantly the size of the pieces need to be right for you.
Over 50% of average UK women wear the wrong bra size, and this is detrimental both to their posture and style but also to their health as ill-fitting bras can lead to back ache and skin sores.
Wearing the wrong bra size can also make you look a larger size than you are, as smaller bra cup and back sizes can push skin out creating undesirable muffin top and underarm fat effects. If unsure as to whether the bra you are currently wearing is the right size for you, there are a few tests which can be done to determine whether you should try a different size.
Band size
Firstly, a common problem is where the strap sits on your back. If it does not sit in a straight horizontal line across your back, but rides up slightly or arches, then you are wearing a back size too large. Contrastingly if the back strap causes red marks on your back or digs into your skin, then you may need to try a larger back size.
Secondly, the central panel between the cups should lie flat between your breasts. If it pulls away even slightly, this suggests the cups are too small.
Lastly, women often complain of bra wires digging into their skin tissue. A bra cup and thus the wire should completely encase the main part of the breast. If it does not this may be due to a small band size or you should simply try a larger cup size.
Having got a rough idea of your size from the steps above, you should be able to work out your bra size.
Cup size
Another misconception is that a bigger cup size determines the size of your breasts. However a 38B holds more volume of breast tissue than a 32D; the bands and cups are all relative to different sizes. Therefore in practice if you have determined you need to move down a band size but keep the same cup and you are currently a 36DD, you should move to a 34E not a 34DD.
It is important to bear in mind your size when buying and making clothes as well as bustier ladies suit different shapes to those with a more athletic build. It also important to consider this when dressmaking, as commercial patterns are also based on a B cup; it is important to alter this aspect if necessary.
Essentially, your choice in underwear can affect your posture, confidence and silhouette and it is incredibly important to ensure you wear the right size bra and get one of a high quality as it is worth paying slightly extra for something which will make you feel fabulous!
